AT&T’s U-verse IPTV system is slated for installation in 700 rooms in a 547,000sq-ft dormitory at the University of Houston. The installation is AT&T’s first deployment of an IPTV system on a college campus.
Calhoun Lofts, located next to the university’s C.T. Bauer College of Business, will have more than 1000 AT&T U-verse connections in one- and two-bedroom apartments, the company said. The hall is for graduate and professional students.
The $108 million residence hall broke ground last fall and is scheduled for completion in 2009. It is part of the university’s plan to double the square footage of its buildings on the 550-acre campus and add 10,000 students to increase enrollment to 45,000.

Texas was the first state in which AT&T U-verse services were deployed, because of legislation passed in September 2005 by the Texas Legislature and signed by the governor. In the greater Houston area, more than 500,000 living units have the service available 16 months after it was introduced.
The telco competes in Houston with incumbent cable provider Comcast, which took over the system from Time Warner Cable in June 2007.
